Moving Help and How to

Moving is never easy there are millions of things to think about and remember.  Here are some tips to help you out...

  • Make a list, you'll thank yourself later.
  • Have plenty of packing supplies
  • Boxes, paper, tape, markers, bubble wrap, packing wrap, packing blankets.
  • Color coded labels...I like one color for each room
    • Example, blue for the living room, red for the dining room
  • Multiple color keys for your labels to keep everyone on track
  • Pack your papers and important documents including prescriptions in a "Go With Box."  This container should be durable, lockable and portable and should stay with you.
  • Don't forget your pets...board them on moving day.
  • Don't forget your children...young children should be looked after off site the day of packing.  Older children's can be assigned age appropriate tasks.  You know your children better than anyone.
  • Consider hiring a lawn service or cleaning service to come the day you move after you've vacated your home.
  • If using a mover make sure to ask what they will NOT move
    • Most movers will not handle flammable materials
  • Use wardrobe boxes for everything from the contents of a closet to comforters and pillows.
  • Have a pre-assembled cleaning kit.
  • Pre pack while your home is on the market.  Rent a pod and pack seasonal items and anything you're not using.  You're moving anyway so clear out the house.
  • Yard sale, donate and cull unwanted items.
  • Plan meals ahead, limit food shopping in the weeks leading up to your move.
    • Clean out that freezer by cooking ahead meals ready to eat or microwave and eat the week of your move.
  • Consider selling your refrigerator, freezer, washer and dryer with your old home.  Since your moving it might be a good time to upgrade and update your appliances.
  • Driving cross country to a new town, have your vehicles serviced well in advance.
  • Make sure you understand how your funds for settlement must be presented.  Some attorneys will not accept out of state trust account checks so funds must be wired, your REALTOR can help you with this.
  • Forward your mail
  • Leave keys and owner's manuals in a kitchen drawer and leave the garage door openers.
